2020-2021 Waiver Information

The Texas A&M University System has established five (5) circumstances in which International Students can request a waiver to the student health insurance plan by providing proof of alternate health coverage.  In order to be approved for a waiver, your alternate health coverage must meet the requirements as set in the System regulation and be submitted with proof documentation prior to the deadline.

If you are an International student who is enrolled in the Graduate Student Employee (GSE) Plan, or you are a covered spouse on the GSE plan:

Approved waivers are valid for one semester. A waiver is required for each semester you are enrolled for classes (fall, spring/summer).

  1. Student is sponsored by the United States government, or
  2. Student is sponsored by a foreign government recognized by the United States or certain international, government-sponsored or non-governmental organizations, and covered under a health plan that is compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA). If the health plan does not include medical evacuation and repatriation, a rider must be purchased providing coverage at equal limits to the SHIP; or
  3. Student is enrolled in an employer-provided group health plan (excluding a TAMUS employer provided group plan, A&M Care plan or GSE plan) that is compliant with the ACA. If the health plan does not include medical evacuation and repatriation, a rider must be purchased providing coverage at equal limits to the SHIP; or
  4. Student is enrolled in only distance learning programs; or
  5. Student is involved in intercollegiate athletics and coverage for all medical insurance is provided through a policy as part of the current sports accident medical policy approved by System Risk Management.

Health Insurance Requirements:

  1. Policy provides the Essential Minimum Benefits required by the PPACA with no annual limits. (Listed below)
  2. Policy annual deductible of no more than U.S. $500 (except for employer plans).
  3. Repatriation expenses in the amount of no less than $25,000.
  4. Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the insured to the insured’s home country of no less than $50,000.
  5. Policy contains no exclusions for pre-existing conditions. Policy covers 100% of Preventive Care as defined by the PPACA, and
  6. The Student’s alternate insurance plan must cover the coverage period.

PPACA Minimum Essential Health Benefits

  1. Ambulatory patient services
  2. Emergency services
  3. Hospitalization (such as surgery)
  4. Pregnancy, maternity, and newborn care (care for a mother and baby before and after the baby is born)
  5. Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment, counseling and psychotherapy
  6. Prescription drugs
  7. Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices
  8. Laboratory services
  9. Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management

Student Health Insurance Plan Waiver Criteria

The Texas A&M University System has established five circumstances in which an international student can request a waiver to the student health insurance plan by providing alternative health insurance coverage. In order to be approved for a waiver, your alternate health coverage must meet the requirements as set in the System Regulation and be submitted with proof documentation prior to the deadline.

Please review these prior to submitting your waiver request.

  1. Student is sponsored by the United States government; or
  2. Student is sponsored by a foreign government recognized by the United States or certain international, government-sponsored or non-governmental organizations, and covered under a health plan that is compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA). If the health plan does not include medical evacuation and repatriation, a rider must be purchased providing coverage at equal limits to the SHIP; or
  3. Student is enrolled in an employer-provided group health plan that is compliant with the ACA. If the health plan does not include medical evacuation and repatriation, a rider must be purchased providing coverage at equal limits to the SHIP; or
  4. Student is enrolled in only distance learning programs; or
  5. Student is involved in intercollegiate athletics and coverage for all medical insurance is provided through a policy as part of the current sports accident medical policy approved by System Risk Management.
  6. Alternate Coverage must be effective 5/17/21 – 8/31/21.

Acquire the following scanned documents before clicking below to submit your waiver information:

  1. A scanned copy of the front and back of your health insurance ID card indicating you are a covered member.
  2. A scanned copy of your complete policy, including exclusions & limitations and dependent coverage
